The argument
The Dashboard Says Green. What Did It Test?
Automation becomes Dashboard Delusion when a status result replaces understanding of the test scope, population, method, timing, exceptions, and relationship to the control objective.
The field pattern
The compliance platform reports 98 percent passing. One integration queries a subset of cloud accounts. Another checks configuration state but not operating history. Several assets are manually excluded. The executive view is beautifully green because the gray parts are not visible.
Why it matters
Tools can be excellent evidence producers. They are not self-interpreting. PCI DSS testing still requires understanding the applicable population and evaluating whether controls are implemented as expected; sampling, when used, must represent relevant variants.
The delusion is not that the dashboard is wrong. It is that the dashboard is complete. Good evidence preserves the chain from control objective to test method to population to result to exception handling.
Questions that expose the Wack
- What exactly did the integration query, and what could it not see?
- Which population and variants are represented in the result?
- Does the test demonstrate configuration, operation, or both?
- How are failures, exclusions, stale integrations, and manual overrides surfaced?
